In detail...

After living on and managing large farming property for over 60 years it was time downsize and simplify life.

After much deliberation the decision was made to build a new home in the nearby township on a suburban lot. But downsizing from 1000 acres to 600m2 was never going to be easy. Eventually the focus became the exciting opportunity to design and build a new home which continued to provide the ability to run a small business which provided great enjoyment. A very technical & highly detailed person the owner wanted a very energy efficient home, be low maintenance & designed so as to live in or cared for, for as long as possible as life progressed.

The owner was heavily involved in the design process, having strong ideas on the type of structure. The brief was to create a home which provided as much integration with both current & future needs as possible. Energy & Thermal efficiency was paramount ensuring that passive solar principles was implemented in every aspect where possible. Zero thresholds throughout to eliminate trip hazards, all door ways and wet areas to be fully accessible, and a workshop/garage to be integrated as part of the home.

My challenge for this project was to co-ordinate the many uncompromising structural desires whilst creating a cohesive & modern design aesthetic throughout.

Beautiful Daniel Robertson bricks together with Colorbond corrugated iron were chosen for the external cladding including the eave lining. High specification double glazing was installed, together with a 20kW array of Solar panels and in-slab hydronic heating throughout. A fully insulated concrete slab was adopted for the floor, for both thermal mass and as the vehicle for the hydronic heating. Extensive built in cabinetry was custom designed and co-ordinated with quality fittings used throughout.

The finished product is a very functional and ultimately beautiful, light filled, open plan home, perfectly suited to the needs of the owner. It is low maintenance, highly energy efficient and will truly stand the test of time.
